Ice Blue (#1 of the Lord and Lady Hetheridge Mystery Series) by Emma Jameson -- Book Review

Book Review of the Lord and Lady Hetheridge Mystery Series on The Assassin Librarian Blog. Here are my ratings and thoughts on Emma Jameson's Novel - Ice Blue.

This book actually surprised me a lot. Both in terms of the plot and the setting. I, at first, thought that this was set in Victorian London. But that was not the case. It is set in modern London with cars and mobile phones flooding the area. Secondly, I had guessed after reading the title 'Lord and Lady Hetheridge Mystery Series' that it would be some kind of romance. But never in my wildest dreams had I thought that it was based on the 'age-gap romance trope'.

I know. I know. There's a reason why there is a synopsis behind a book. But I don't read the synopsis for the fear of spoiling the book nor do I check the trope on which it is based.

The book follows DS Bhar, DS Wakefield and Chief Superintendent Hetheridge - all employees of Scotland Yard. Anthony Hetheridge is 60 years old and is the Baron of Wellegrave but despite his wealth and handsome features, he is unmarried. But everything changes when he enters Scotland Yard to Kate Wakefield and her boss Vic Jackson fighting and shouting on top of each other. He, being both of their bosses, is forced to scold and punish both, which leads him to fall in love with the gutsy Kate Wakefield. Kate is very practical, smart, beautiful and strong. She has been dealing with problems since she can remember and the dominance of men in the society and her workforce is the least of her concerns.

The trio consists of an Indian, DS Bhar. I felt that the book did justice to him. The jokes he has to endure and the jokes he makes in response all depicted that he is one of those Indians with a big heart. His mother, Sharda, too is the epitome of an Indian mother. Overprotective, gives too much thought to what others think of her and always open to new things.

Kate's adopted family is her everything. It is the reason why she goes early home, and has some company in her life. She's had the privilege of meeting many douche bags along the way but it seems that finally someone caring, understanding, wise and MATURE has been found.

The characters of this book are well thought about and have their own uniqueness. Each and every character brings something to the book whether its the depth, humour, problematic situations etc. The mystery aspect develops along with their personal lives and I was guessing till the end.

I just felt that in terms of the romance, it was way too fast. As if I had missed a book in between. It was as if Kate was not aware of the 30 year age gap between them and she did not care about it. At a personal level the romance has no obstacles and both Kate and Anthony have acknowledged their love for each other without any reluctance.

So, here's the verdict -

Mystery - 💖💖💖💖💖/💖💖💖💖💖

Romance -  💕💕/💕💕💕💕💕

But you will love this book if you read -

  • Office Romance
  • Fast Paced Romance
  • Handsome and Rich Male Lead
  • Strong Female Lead
  • 'Love has no age' theme
In the end, I would just like to say that I am very glad that I found Emma Jameson's books. And I am going to venture next into her Mr. Bones mystery series hoping that it would be the perfect fit.
